I finally found the perfect use for the eight, white kitchen tiles taking up space in my craft supply stash! I originally bought them years ago, with a coaster project in mind, but I never ended up following through with it. As part of my 100 Day Project (I'm attempting to make by hand for 100 days in a row) I began digging through my craft bins, to see what project supplies I could put to use. I searched "tile coaster projects" on Pinterest, and found a bunch of cool ideas (sharpie designs and polka dot patterns look fun!). I ended up using this DIY blog as a guide for my very own resin coated photo tile coasters.
I bought this resin from Amazon, but for eight tiles, I could have ordered a smaller pack. You can do this project with modge podge, but based on the blogs I read, it's not nearly as heat and water resistant as the resin is. I wanted these to turn out well the first time making them, so I sprung for the resin, and am so pleased with the results!
First, I used a glue stick to adhere the prints to the tiles. Then, I mixed equal parts epoxy resin with the hardener, in my own makeshift measuring cup. (I'd recommend buying the kits you'll see on Amazon.) I stirred for two minutes, and poured the mixture over the coasters. Then, I used a piece of card stock to even out the epoxy, working to cover the corners and edges as best I could. While they dried, I blew through a straw to combat the bubbles that started to appear in the gloss. I also ran a straw under each coaster to remove excess resin that started to collect.
Overall, the product was really user friendly. You have to work quickly, but the directions that came with the resin were super easy to follow. I waited 72 hours for the epoxy to dry, and then attached little felt stoppers to the bottom side of each coaster.
My favorite part of these coasters is that I got to put some of the photos from my Parabo Press photo party to use! The prints happened to be the exact size I needed, and fit my tiles perfectly. I even used four photos that my friend Christina took of my patio, to make a set of plant themed coasters. I ended up gifting them to her: what a perfect full circle craft!
The coasters are mega glossy (in a good way) and so far, have stood up against my nightly cup of hot tea. I love that I was able to use some simple supplies, most of which I already had on hand, in this practical, personalized, and gorgeous project!
