I know summer is almost over, but I couldn't resist documenting and sharing more highlights from our Maui trip in August. So, let's talk swimming, and sunsets.
Jason and I swam nearly every day we were in Maui and we loved taking the GoPro in the water with us. It felt like when I was little and my Mom bought a waterproof disposable camera one summer. Except with the GoPro we didn't have to wait to see the pictures until we returned home, we could see them on our phone when we got out of the water! PSA: sunscreen, sunscreen, and more sunscreen. I was diligent about reapplying my SPF 30 the first day we were out, but unfortunately still ended up with a case of the dreaded "pink shoulders". This made swimming less than enjoyable on our second day. Lesson (re)learned.
When I was a little girl I enjoyed leaping into the pool on vacations, without embarrassment over my hair or if my mascara was running down my cheeks. My signature jump was the "pencil" and I loved swimming in the deep end for Torpedo pool toys with my siblings. My biggest concern when it came to swimwear was comfort, not fashion. Somewhere between middle school and today, I started caring if my hair got wet, and reminded whomever I was with to, "Stop splashing me!".
Suddenly, I was too cool for the pool.
Real talk, I did plug my nose before nearly every jump, because I was -and still am- terrified of swallowing too much water, but we can leave that for another blog post. Recently, I realized sometimes I like actually going under water when I'm at the pool. Other times I don't feel like rewashing my hair if I have to go somewhere later, and that's ok too. I'm ready to start allowing myself the "luxury" of dunking my head under, especially if it's hot outside. Because what's better than actually enjoying something while you're experiencing it? This is also known as, what I like to call, Living Your Life. This post serves as an homage to the Smart Girls' campaign #GetYourHairWet. Because as they remind us, "When you dunk all the way in, life is way more fun!" I couldn't agree more, as long as I can plug my nose sometimes.
If you aren't familiar with Amy Poehler's awesome online and real life organization, check out their website. They are one of my favorite brands to follow on social media. In fact, they killed the Emmys this weekend with their "Smart Girls Ask" campaign, prompting the media to ask female attendees about more than what they are wearing.
My other favorite activity, besides figuring out where to eat next, was watching the sunset each evening. I find it so relaxing to sit and watch Mother Nature in action. On the last night, we planned on going out to a fancy dinner. So, I excitedly put on my favorite new Loft dress, that I scored for 50% off - pink and orange is one of my favorite color combos. I was so happy the weather obliged and we were able to squeeze in a photo shoot, with my personal paparazzi, Jason.
Until next time, Maui. Aloha! xo
